We don't expect staff to work the entire event, but we are asking that staff commit to one of the 2.5 hour shifts: 8:00am-10:30am (setup), 10:30am-1:00pm or 1:00pm-3:30pm. Below are brief descriptions of the positions we need help with. If you would like to work the event, please fill out the sign-up form by clicking on the link below.

| Setup: Setup rings and tables, help sign-in and weigh-in students. |
TOURNAMENT FORMAT:
There will be gi and no-gi divisions. Students may compete in both gi and no-gi. The format for all divisions is double elimination.
Each school will be allowed two competitors per weight class in each experience level. For example, Boston BJJ will be allowed two competitors to compete in gi beginner lightweight. We will do our best to place competitors from the same school on opposite ends of the brackets. However, there is always the possibility, especially in smaller divisions, that competitors from the same school may have to compete against each other. Competitor(s) may move up to a higher weight class, but cannot go up more than two weight classes (and only competitors above 210lbs can go up to Super+).
Some weight classes may be combined if there are not enough competitors to create a bracket. This is so that all student have the opportunity to compete and will be done as fairly as possible. Only two consecutive weight classes will be combined. If there are only two competitors in a division, then they will have to face each other twice, unless both agree to not compete a second time. If one of the competitors does not want the 2nd match, then it is a forfeit win for the other competitor. If there is only one competitor in a division, and their weight class is not merged, then that competitor will have two choices: 1) They can compete up to two weight classes higher, space permitting, or 2) They can receive a refund, but receive no 1st place and no team points.
Different experience levels will not be combined in order to form a bracket. To ensure fair competition, all competitors are expected to accurately represent their grappling experience (see below).

ADULT EXPERIENCE LEVELS:
Competitors should sign up for their appropriate experience level. A students "rank" or time training BJJ is only a guideline, and significant experience in other grappling styles, such as wresting, judo, etc should - and will - be taken into consideration. If you are unsure of which experience level to compete in, talk to your instructor or the tournament organizer (email: tournaments@northeastbjj.com) determine which division you should sign up for. All competitors must compete at the same experience level for gi and no-gi divisions.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL INCLUDES TIME TRAINING OTHER GRAPPLING STYLES <SPECIFICALLY WRESTLING>
Men's Experience Levels for Gi and No-Gi:
Beginner |
less than 1yr training |
Intermediate |
1 - 2.5yrs training |
Advanced |
2.5+ yrs training |
WEIGHT CLASSES:
Adult weight classes are the same for gi and no-gi divisions. Gi division weights are without the gi on.
Men's division weight classes:
Rooster: up to 126.5 lbs |
Super Feather: up to 141.0 lbs |
Feather: up to 154.0 lbs |
Light: up to 167.5 lbs |
Medium: up to 181.0 lbs |
Medium Heavy: up to 194.5 lbs |
Heavy: up to 207.5 lbs |
Super Heavy: up to 221.0 lbs |
Super +: 221.5 lbs - 275 lbs |
Be realistic when choosing your weight class. Students should not be attempting to cut large amounts of weight. This is an in-house tournament, not the pan ams. And keep in mind that there is always the possibility your weight class will be combined with a higher one. We will give competitors an allowance of a couple pounds at weigh-ins. However, if you show up significantly over your pre-registered weight, you will be moved to another (higher) weight class, space permitting.
ADVANCED DIVISIONS:
Advanced divisions will be split into three weight classes and may be combined or be split further depending on number of competitors. Students (blue belts, wrestlers, etc) that are "competing up" in the advanced division cannot compete at the lower experience levels.
Advanced division weight classes:
Light |
Rooster - Medium (135 - 181 lbs) |
Medium |
Medium Heavy - Super Heavy (181.5 - 221 lbs) |
Heavy |
Super + (221.5 - 275 lbs) |
WOMEN, TEEN AND CHILDRENS DIVISIONS:
Women, teens, and children divisions will be divided by age, experience and weight as fairly as possible, but we cannot list specific divisions and weights ahead of time, as there usually is a limited number of competitors in these divisions. Generally, we break apart competitors by age (7 and under, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17) which will normally correpsond to similar weight and experience levels. The earlier that competitors sign up for these divisions, the better we will be able to determine brackets. Women may compete in the men's divisions, provided they receive permission from their instructor and the tournament organizer (email: tournaments@northeastbjj.com).
2010 TEAM POINTS RACE:
The 2010 team champion will be the school with the most cumulative points for the year (including the 2010 championship tournament). Teams will earn points for all of their students that medal in a division. Seperate team champions will be awarded for Adults and for Kids & Teens.
RULES OF COMPETITION:
The rules of point scoring and technique restrictons will primarily be those utilized by the IBJJF, specifically Articles 5-9: http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm. However, there are some in-house tournament rules that differ from the IBJJF rules, and they are either outlined below or at the rules meeting.
Mouth pieces are required for all competitors - this rule will be strictly enforced: NO MOUTHPIECE = NO MATCHES. Mouthpieces must be smooth and have no protruding or sharp edges. Inexpensive mouthpieces may be available for purchase at the tournament, but it is recommended that each competitor bring their own. All competitors must be in good health and have trimmed nails.
Regulation solid color jiu-jitsu gi's must be worn in the gi divisions. Rash guards and board shorts must be worn in the no-gi divisions. No parts of the uniform (gi and no-gi) may have any sharp or hard edges. Underwear is required (gi and no-gi) and uniforms must be clean.
There will be no neck cranks, cervical locks, heel hooks, twisting knee locks, knee bars, toe holds, bicep or calf locks, wrist locks, small joint locks, scissor takedowns, or guard slams in any divisions. Straight ankle locks are allowed in intermediate and advanced adult divisions only. No submissions are allowed below the waist in Beginner, Teens and Kids divisions. Referees will stop and restart competitors if they feel there is a dangerous position or illegal submission attempt. Repeated warnings of dangerous positions or illegal submission attempts will result in disqualification. Women's divisions will follow the same rules as men's divisions.
All Beginner, Teens and Kids divisions will start from their knees and there will be no takedown points awarded in these divisions. The referees, at their discretion, may start or restart beginners, teens or kids competitors in one of the competitor’s guards.
Intermediate and advanced divisions will start from the feet. The referees, at their discretion, may restart intermediate or advanced competitors in one of the competitor’s guards if they feel that there is too much inactivity, or a stalemate, in the standing position.
Competitors should not be attempting to finish submissions to the point of injuring their opponents, and, conversely, competitors should not resist submissions to the point of injury. Referees may "tap out" a competitor if they feel they are in danger of being injured from a submission. (Screaming will be considered a verbal submission)
This in-house tournament is a friendly competition between our Association of schools, so any un-sportsman like conduct or overly aggressive behavior by competitors (or guests) will not be tolerated. Referees may warn and/or disqualify competitors if they feel they are wrestling too aggressively. One coach per competitor and respectful coaching only. There will be no arguing with the referees.
Any violations of the aforementioned rules are grounds for disqualification.
MATCH POINTS AWARDED:
2 pts - sweep, takedown, knee on stomach
3 pts - guard pass
4 pts - mount, rear mount with hooks
Advantage - Attempting and almost completing a fundamental move (sweep, pass, mount, takedown, submission)
MATCH LENGTH:
Adult Intermediate and Advanced division matches will be 5 minutes in length. Adult Beginner division matches will be 4 minutes in length. All teen and kids divisions matches will be 4 minutes in length. There will be no overtime. If the score is tied (points and advantages), then it will be the referee’s decision.
MEDALS:
Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each division, both gi and no-gi.
